Colonial Addition
These clients wanted a Great Room addition that fit in with their 1740’s era house. We accomplished this task by making the addition appear as an out building, which was commonly done in Colonial times. Access to the new room was achieved by turning part of the back porch into an entryway into the new room. The clapboard siding, tall, multi paned windows, ½ round gutters, and the cupola all mimic the period, as does the timber framed interior. The timber framing is not structural – that would have been beyond our clients’ budget, so we took standard 6x6 beams, a hatchet, and dark stain to achieve the effect. We also mimicked a colonial era walk in cooking fireplace to house the wood burning stove. Our clients then happily filled the space with antiques to complete the effect.
